George Warren Kenney 1937-2016
George was born June 4, 1937 in Springfield, the son of Charles Marshall and Alberta Mae Hillyard Kenney.
George graduated from Springfield High School in 1955, where he played basketball, football and baseball. George fondly remembered playing in the State Basketball Tournament. He earned his bachelor's degree from Millikin University in Decatur, where he played basketball and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
He earned his juris doctorate from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. George was an attorney in Springfield for more than 50 years primarily with the firm Kenney & Pearson. He was also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Sangamon County Bar Association. He joined the American Business Club in January of 1967, served as President from 1975–1976 and became a life member in August 1984. George enjoyed running and competed in three marathons. He was also fond of golfing and his annual fishing trips to Bennett Springs, MO for the past 50 years. He was a regular patron at his favorite watering hole, where he enjoyed stimulating conversations and watching sports with his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Zachary Clark.
He is survived by his son, Brian (wife, Carolyn) Kenney of Linn Creek, MO; daughters, Kara (husband, Keith) Sias and Jill Kenney, both of Springfield; grandchildren, Amanda (husband, George) Metcalf of Springfield, IL, Matthew and Krista Kenney of Springfield, MO, and Holly and David Sias of Springfield, IL; three great-grandchildren, Gabe, Roman, and Freya Metcalf; brother, Charles "Bud" (wife, Janet) Kenney, MD of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be deeply missed by the Maloy and Gietl families. Services have been held.
