The ISBA Environmental Law Section hosted a Professional Development Luncheon on April 13 at the Chicago Office. Mr. Gerald M. Keenan, Chairman of the Illinois Pollution Control Board spoke on the initiatives of and challenges facing the Board in 2016 and beyond.
The Hon. John Gorman, was honored at the 2015 Lawyers’ Assistance Program Joseph R. Bartylak Award Dinner on Friday, April 8, at the Sangamo Club in Springfield. Matthew Hutmacher received the President's Award. Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Rita B. Garman served as the keynote speaker.
The International Academy of Dispute Resolution honored ISBA Past President Fred Lane and CBA Past President Joseph Stone with Lifetime Achievement Awards and the Alliance of Bar Associations and Administrator Joyce Williams with a Special Recognition at its Gala on April 13 at the Standard Club in Chicago.
The ISBA co-sponsored the Future is Now: Legal Services 2.016 conference on April 6 at Chase Bank Auditorium in Chicago. The event was organized by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism. Speakers included ISBA Past President Tim Eaton (moderator), Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Rita Garman, Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism Executive Director Jayne Reardon, UpRight Law CEO Ed Scanlan, ARDC Deputy Administrator James Grogan, Center for Access to Justice and Technology Director Professor Ronald Staudt, ISBA President-Elect Vincent F. Cornelius, LegalZoom General Counsel Chas Rampenthal, Hickey Smith Partner for Legal Operations Thomas Lysaught and Washington State Bar Association Executive Director Paula Littlewood.
Teams from 38 high schools from throughout Illinois participated in the 34th annual Illinois State Bar Association High School Mock Trial Invitational on April 2-3 at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign. ISBA President Umberto S. Davi and members of the ISBA Law Related Education Committee served as volunteers to rate the students' performance. Elmhurst’s Timothy Christian High School was declared the winner and will represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Boise, Idaho. St. Charles North came in second and received the Donna Schechter Award for the highest team average on the Written Law Exam. Chicago Christian of Palos Heights placed third.
The Madison County Bar Association and the St. Clair County Bar Association co-hosted a Joint Meeting on March 24 at the DoubleTree Conference Center in Collinsville.
The luck of the Irish was with ISBA participants in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, as they enjoyed warm weather on their march along Chicago’s Columbus Drive.
The Illinois Bar Foundation hosted Lawyers Rock 2016 at the Double Door in Chicago on March 10. Participating bands included 5-thirty, Flood Waters, Irish Bar Band, The Objections and The Thornes.
